Atalanta : The Boar by BeatrizMartinVidal Atalanta : The Boar by BeatrizMartinVidal
This one is for the story of Atalanta: Well, the first of them. It's a little confusing, but, esentially she shooted an arrow and killed a boar. And then there was chaos, confusion and a lot of people was killed. Well, you know how greek mythology goes.
This illustration is one of the little ones. The big ones are watercolor, the little ones are pencil on colored paper with gouache higlights and digital color. It sounds more complicated than it is.

This is really beautiful! I love the muted colors. You drew her stance perfectly, though I'm pretty sure that the arrow goes on the other side of the bow. I shoot right handed, and my arrow rests on the left side of the bow.

Yep. You are correct. If you pull the string with your finger then the arrow goes on the knuckle side. For Asian archery, where they pull the string with their thumb, the arrow goes on the thumb side.

AHA!! Sorry, I just started learning about the different kinds of shooting forms all over the world. Up until recently I'd been living a very sheltered archery life.

This is an amazing drawing and I feel really bad to point this out, but I feel the need to as an archer.
You have represented her as a right handed shooter, therefore the arrow would be on a rest or leaning on her fingers on the opposite side of the bow to what is drawn. Other then that I love it, I especially like the arm guard, it matches in with the colouring very well and not to insult you in anyway but the swirls kinda look like a moustache.

I thought she hurt the boar, and then Meleager killed it and gave her the hide as a present.
Details, I guess.

Anyway, I really like the silhouette background composition here...

Atlanta or (Άρτεμης in Greek and Diana in Latin) was the goddess of hunting for ancient Greeks.the story by the way goes like this:In the myth there was king Ineas (Οινέας ) of Kalydona (Καλυδώνα).Every year this king would give to the twelve gods the first fruits that would manifest ob the trees...However one year he did gave the fruits to the gods appart from Atlanta .Because this was insulting to her she decided to take revenge!!!So she sent the giant boar to kalydona who would kill the farmers when they tried to harvest and generally he caused damages to the village.so Ineas had to do some thing about this disasters so he called Hercules for help who obviously killed the boar and they lived happyly ever after

That is close to the truth. Artemis takes Atlanta's place in your story, and Atlanta joined a group of heroes who set out to kill the boar. Meleager was one of the people that was in the group. Atlanta was the first one to hit the boar with an arrow and draw blood. Meleager ended up being the one to kill the boar with his spear and gave it's skin to Atlanta as a gift.

she actually looks a bit masculine in this drawing...which i find appropriate, because there are some scholars that suggest (and i agree) that she might have been homosexual. atalanta was raised by bears and a good huntress ... not the best, but in the calydonian boar hunt she did NOT kill the boar. she only was the first to strike it with her arrow. the other men killed it. the brothers killed each other after meleager presented the head to atalanta (a female) instead of the men who actually killed it!

ah but some say she married her cousin melanion because he beat her in a foot race with help of aphrodite and had a son, who was a hero and later killed by one of orions grandchildren, and i find it kinda sexist at the bottom with the (a female) part

I know she didn’t kill the boar, but, as I put in the comment it’s a little confusing and “then there was chaos, confusion and a lot of people was killed”. I suppose I should have explained the complete story but, frankly, even the people involved in the incident wasn’t sure and that’s because they fight for the credit of the boar’s death. Is it really important?. She hurt it, saved Meleager, and as he did the definitive and mortal wound, take the credit for the boar’s death. And then, there was a figth because his brother thought that Atalanta was who deserved the credit. Oh well, I’ll try to be more accurate in my comment next time.

Great piece. The gouache shows up nice, something I find is hard to do when scanning original artwork. Great design as-well.

I see in your journal entry you have a book out: I will be picking this up.

well, in fact the thumb in her rigth hand is folded. If you look to an archer that's the way they do it. I know it seems a little odd, but that's the way they put their hands. Thanks Nuri.

Wonderful picture, I wondered about one thing though. Wouldn’t the picture be better if you had continued the crossbox, rather then just keep it inside the boar mask.

Still, I really adore this picture. Three thumbs up!
